The girls in the suite wanted to make fastnachts, which after a bit of research, I found was a tradition for the Pennsylvania Dutch to have on Fastnacht Day, the day before Lent starts on Ash Wednesday.  They're basically fried doughnuts, with lots of fat and sugar, which the Dutch had to fast from during lent, so they made these to get rid of any fat and sugar they had on hand before Lent began.
One of my suitemates, Maddie, makes these with her grandma every year, and this year she didn't get to since we're so busy with tests, so we all made them here at the dorm.  I usually don't like eating things that are fried, and I'm totally against everything that has shortening, but I made an exception today to try one of these..and they were delicious, I will admit!
